Master-course Seminar (Research Guidance)
In my master-course seminar, we will first review the basics of the introductory econometrics by using STATA. Based on your undestanding of the theoretical part, I will assign computer exercises in Hill, Griffith, and Lim's textbook, Principles of Econometrics. I prefer this book to Wooldridge's because it provides examples taken from more various fields though its theoretical explanation is a bit old-fashioned. In the first semester, we will repeat presentation of answers and discussions by students. In the second semester I will require students to present empricial papers that they are interested in. There are two objectives. One is to grasp how to write an academic paper and the other is to look for a topic that students are focusing on in their master theses. In fact, they must decided not only the topic they will address in their theses but also start to consider the emprical framework and collect the dataset. In the third semester, students concentrate their effort on analyzing the data they collected, discussing the implications with other students, and finally complete writing their master theses.
Note that I myself am not an expert in econometric theory or application of econometrics. My major is the applied microeconomic theory and game theory, in particular in the field of public finance, public economics, and poitical economics. All I can advise you in my seminar covers issues related to basic econometrics. If you like to study and use the latest econometric theory, here is not where you should come.
Of course, if you are interested in the theoretical analysis that I have been studying and intends to proceed to the Ph.D. program, you are very welcome.
